Because Writing Helps

Since elementary school, when something upsets me, I just write about it. So here we go again.
Tonight I had a freak out.
I cry a lot, but by cry I mean there are a lot of things that get me choked up and make a few tears come out,
but tonight I started crying and couldn't stop.
About not being able to get a job, about being mad at some people, about being sad for others, about not being able to pull off a good grade in a stats class, and mostly about the realization that my career as an athlete is basically over and that it's hard for other people to understand why that is so depressing; and maybe it's so depressing because sports were the only thing I ever saw improvement with myself in.
Just one of those nights, eh?

Laying Out

Unemployment is worse than employment, trust me. BUT, I have been making the most of it by soaking up the sun and spending lots of time outside.

7 Peaks
Materials: towel, sunscreen, id
Pros: People, security, water
Cons: Lines, people

Secret Canyon
Materials: Water, towel, sunscreen, mace, whistle, good shoes
Pros: Absolutely no one is there. Ever. Best quiet place to read, relax, and think.
Cons: No security, a little hike. If I ever go missing, check here (Slate Canyon) first.

P.S. Lack of blogging = wedding planning is so much busier than I thought it would be. But Gavin was so good shopping with me all day yesterday :)

Threaded

You turn east at the Top It intersection, not west.
Ouch!
I would do this again.
Sorry Gav, looks like we'll be paying $15 every now and then for eyebrows.
"You need highlights. Without highlights your hair will look dull and that doesn't match your personality because you are not dull Debbie!"

5 statements the sum up my experience at Evolve salon getting my eyebrows...'threaded'.
I recommend it.

Superstitions

Things I will never do:
  • count the cars on a train
  • break a mirror
  • walk under a ladder
(I am knocking on wood as I am writing this)

Happy Friday the 13th everyone!

Mr. Pitbull, is it?

Not necessarily a fan in the first place but now I just think you are an idiot.

in·ter·na·tion·al
adj. Abbr. int. or intl.
1. Of, relating to, or involving two or more nations: an international commission; international affairs.
2. Extending across or transcending national boundaries: international fame.

Down like New York city
Wild like Los Angelos
Hotter than Miami

I believe these are all cities within the United States of America,
which happens to be one nation.
I could be wrong.

Sorry... I had to tell someone.

Resolves

New Years Resolutions. I make a lot of goals, mostly because I steer away from my goals so often that I have to write them down again and recommit. A lot of people say they don't like making resolutions because they never stick with them anyways. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, as long as you keep making goals and are continuously working for what you want in life. One factor in achieving is writing down goals and letting others see them.
Dear world (or 5 people who read this), here are my resolutions with too much explanation:
  • Learn to cook... and cook healthy
  • Attend the temple more.
  • Score a goal in every game. If I don't get it in a game, I will just score 2 in the next :)
  • Graduate.
  • Get more out of scripture study. (Summer of 2009 I made a goal to read the Book of Mormon every night. I went 2+ years straight and I think I have only missed 3 nights since. Now that I have the reading habit down, I should do more with it.)
  • Get up to 7 mile runs. I know that sounds like hardly anything to a lot of people. I HATE long distance runs. HATE. I figure if I work at it gradually, it will become less of a pain and more of a habit and I can get to 7 miles on a consistent basis.
  • No candy- not no sweets, just no candy.
  • Feed my savings account. I am not a terrible spender, I am just not a great earner. By this I guess I mean find a full time job when school ends.
  • Learn to drive stick. It may take tears, hopefully not blood. I have tried SO hard to learn and have killed Gavin's car TOO many times. I will no longer use the words "I can't." I am having anxiety just thinking about it, but I want a wrangler. I have to do this.
  • 6 freaking pack. I have made this goal every year for the last 8 years. So what? as long as I am working at it, right?
(My chest may never be there, but the abs I can work for!)

So... until February!
I'd say next year, but let's be realistic. I will make new goals in 2 months.

Deprived

It's been a while since I have done something crazy.
Given I spend 60 hours a week with school, homework, work, and lacrosse,
but now I am feeling deprived and the cold weather doesn't help.
I miss swinging on a rope with a Costa Rican I've never talked to before then landing in a waterfall,
getting lost trying to find hot springs,
being the only sober one to jump 50 feet off a bridge,
and blowing all my money.
Maybe it has something to do with maturity.

Nah...

Any suggestions?

Slacking

There is plenty I could be doing...
Plenty I should be doing...
But none of it has to be done right this instant.
Am I going to do it?
I'll let you figure that out.

Here's my deepest thoughts and emotions of the moment, since it has been a while since I have filled you in.
Footloose is inspiring. From Julianne's body to the music. I will be watching some of those scenes over and over again. Possibly while standing up, wearing cowboy boots and a sweat band.
Besides that, I love my church, family, friends, roommates, boyfriend, team, and my new sweaters (if you look at the link, look at the white sweater and gold necklace behind the weird shirt).
So despite the fact that nothing too new is happening and I am just hanging in there until Thanksgiving break, I'm doin good!

Raindrops on Roses

A while ago, I was wandering through Urban Outfitters,
I came across this little treasure:
It's just a feel good book with lists of things that everyone loves and no one acknowledges.
So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I've written down my own list of awesome...
Happy little moments that make life that much better.
  • Finding money in your pocket
  • Running in the rain
  • Perfectly toasted toast
  • Mail- real mail, not spam
  • Reading cute texts that you have locked in your phone
  • Winning- games, contests, luck, or skill. Winning is awesome!
  • When it stays light at night because of the snow
  • Serving someone
  • Inside jokes
  • Hearing from an old friend
  • Prayers
  • Cooking something all the way through without burning it
  • Songs you loved as a kid/teenager
  • Waking up to no alarm
  • Laughing until you cry

Taking it Personally

Technology hates me.
1. My laptop crashed a couple weeks ago, so I have been in the process of getting a new one, setting it up, copying all my documents, and that sort of fun stuff.
2. My DVD player responds to everyone but me. I press the play button and the DVD pauses. For everyone else it plays.
But last night I conquered it!
Or so I thought.
Turns out all I did was push my luck of electronics for the week.

Today...
I woke up and my phone wouldn't turn on or charge. I took it to the AT&T store, told them my dilemma, and the guy turned it right on. Embarrassing.
Every Monday and Wednesday morning class, we have an iclicker quiz. (An iclicker is a little remote with options A-D to click the answer to the quiz question that appears on the screen.) I pressed the power button on my iclicker and it wouldn't turn on. I double pressed it, it wouldn't turn on. I pressed it hard. No go. I pressed it soft. No luck. I looked at the guy next to me, asked him to turn my iclicker on, he pressed the power button and handed it back to me.
Thanks man.

At what point is this no longer funny?

(This isn't me but it looks like I may not be the only one???)

The Howl

The Howl is the biggest halloween party in Utah, held at USU. So for the past 4 years, after our last-saturday-of-the-month game against West Minster, I have headed up to Logan.
But do I go to the Howl?
Nope!
I love Halloween!

This year, Matt got us free skating and bowling at the fun center.

Then we followed up with the tradish we started last year... scaring people.
I don't know how it started. But basically what we do is put our hair in our faces, hang over a rail by campus, walk with a limp, and jump out at kids walking home from the party.

Freaking blast and a half!
Dear Maddy, you're the coolest person I know!

Person: They're drunk!
Maddy: Funny thing is, we're not.

Person: Are you ok?
Madi: Eeeeeh! Eeeeeh!

Halloween Ideas

Hillary's Idea
Needed: lots of hair coloring and hair spray. I am confident in her ability to make this happen.

Gavin's Idea
I have a pink prom dress, I'm sure I could find white gloves and blue earrings. All Gavin would need is some overalls, a mustache, and a red or green shirt. Pretty doable, right?

My Idea
No it's not scary. I just want an excuse to be as close to her as I can get. I already have a fake ring that looks just like hers (yes I was that fanatic)! Anyone have a long sleeved wedding dress and baby breath flowers I could use??
Black pants, red shirt, blue sash, brown belt. How hard could it be?

Why is She Not Married?

If you catch the flowers, you're soon to go...
Isn't that how it works?

"Bree's bouquet"

Xanni's bouquet

Emily's bouquet

Charolette's bouquet

Maybe she's not married yet because,
Despite all our plans, plots, and practice,
She has never actually really caught a real boquet at a real wedding.
C'mon Mad, Be Aggressive!

Laying down with your eyes closed

Artificial Energy

I have needed a lot of this stuff all week. In the last 55 hours, I have had less than six hours of bed time. 2 4-page papers, 1 test, lacrosse every day, work every day, a yard sale, and am bridal shower tonight. I love being busy! and I can't wait to... what's the word again?.. oh yah! sleep!

Rivalry

The BYU vs U of U is one of the biggest rivalries in the nation! It's true- I heard someone say it on t.v. once. The football game brings out everyone from fair-weather fans to true blue's and babies to grandparents. Most of all though, it brings out some pumped students ready to cheer for their team.
And now that I'm over the heartache of it, I'll post some pictures :)

Old friends, new friends

Red friends, blue friends

It got a little heated, but I'm glad we could have fun at the game together!

When the Poop Hit the Fan

I was going to post about that awesome BYU-Utah game (the word awesome was a sarcastic one). Lucky for you, now I have something else that will probably be a little more exciting to read.
Most of you know I have kind of been dating two guys. In a very little nutshell, I was dating one guy and writing another on his mission. The missionary came home about a month ago and I have been spending time with both the guys to see what could happen. It wasn't fair but it wasn't dishonest either because they have both known about each other.
Needless to say they don't necessarily like each other.
So today I was just chillin on the couch with G and guess what happened!
R came walking through my door.
Most awkward situation of my life. Hands down.
I introduced them, and it was civil. R showed me some pictures of his weekend trip then left and G was not too happy.
That's my story.
Good times.

Our true character shows when unexpected situations arise (the quote Brent posted on my wall in light of the situation).

Facilitated Communication

In the early 90's, a psychologist had a breakthrough in the mystery of autism. He held a common belief that people with autism were really intelligent individuals, but prisoners of their bodies and unable to speak or express what was really going on inside. He pioneered a practice called facilitated communication.
In this process, an autistic child was given a keyboard and a mentor (facilitator). The mentor would hold the child's wrist and help them type on their keyboard what they were thinking. Psychologists, communication specialists, and families were so excited to finally understand their children's wants, needs, and feelings.

Thousands of people flocked to facilitated communication seminars, to learn and to be trained. The testimonials were amazing. One mom was so excited to finally have her child express its love for her. Songs were even written about this breakthrough.
Autistic children started attending regular classes with their facilitators and keyboards. They seemed to understand everything, and got most answers right in math, English, science, and other subjects.
Then tables started to turn and expression wasn't always a good thing. Cases of harassment started popping up all over the country. On the keyboards, kids were typing that their parents or teachers were sexually abusive. Restraining orders and punishments took place even though the perpetrators declared themselves innocent.
Finally, someone decided to test facilitated communication. One test was done where facilitators were shown a picture of one thing (e.g. a key) and the autistic child was shown something else (e.g. a shoe). They were told to type the word associated with the picture. Every time, the autistic children typed the word that was associated with the picture the facilitator saw. Tapes were watched of the children typing and researchers noticed that these children were never even looking at the keyboard when they typed. The whole practice was complete bogus.

It was a good idea, and deserved to be tested, it just should not have been put into practice before being tested. It took people by their hearts. The founder still refuses to say he was wrong. He gave people hope and didn't want to let them down.
"People change their beliefs overnight when it grabs them emotionally."
"Stakes were high because mistakes on either side would be devastating. What if it really worked but wasn't put into practice? What if it was put into practice but didn't really work? (which happened.)"
"It is unbelievable how emotions influence people's conclusions."

Competition

So I really don't like my English class. I don't like it because I like writing and I don't want to know if anyone else doesn't like my writing. Today in class we had to write a short little story, then everyone voted on the best one. If I would have known it was a competition, I would have put a little more heart into it. I didn't win.
Do you know what else I'm taking as a competition? Maddy made police beat at USU. I am quite jealous.

Recent funnies:

I was singing "tonight" to myself. "We're dancing on top of the Hollywood sign."
My 7 year old sister proceeded to correct me on my top 40's lyrics. It really goes "dancing on the edge of the Hollywood sign."

Mom (texting my brothers while they were at a hotel in Vegas): What have you been up to today?
Jake: playing hide-and-seek
Mom (wondering how much damage in the hotel she was going to pay for): What do you mean hide and seek?
Jake: I turned the lights off and it took like 5 minutes for Jordan to find me. There are so many cool places to hide in this room!
Jordan is 17, Jake is 15.

I was compared to chocolate cake- as in really good, but bad for you.

Yesterday Hillary and I were playing lacrosse in the courtyard. That turned into soccer with more people which evolved into Taco Tuesday with even more people. This guy, Rico, drove us to Taco Tuesday at Rubio's in his topless jeep. I love jeeps but my hair was going everywhere and was a mess! I asked if anyone had a hair elastic and Rico just pulled out a bag of hair elastics for me. He said he learned that if he had a jeep, he should probably invest in some elastics too. FPOD.

This is the Way I Live

Isn't there some scripture that talks about not putting new wine in old bottles?
Well that can be applied to laptops.
Don't try new hardware with old computers.
It just won't work.

I keep my laptop in the hall, between my room and the bathroom, on the floor.
Why?
Because there is no table or chairs in the hall.
Because the apartments' new wifi doesn't work on my laptop
and the cable outlet is in my room.
Because my laptop only works while plugged in
and the closest power outlet is in the bathroom.
