Spanish Fork

I don't know what made my weekend so great. Maybe it's that I spent Friday night playing murder in the dark with my 2 little sisters and watching Psych! with my parents. Maybe my weekend was so great because Saturday started with lacrosse. Also, Gavin crowd surfed, and when we were eating at Mis Mariachi's Brent started a sentence with "Next time I come here..." and Randall got covered in chalk. Maybe it's just the fact that those 3 boys are home and I got to see them all. Maddy, Charlotte, and Cassie drove down from Logan for Woodstock, so that, singing Jiya with Maddy, and eating cow tongue probably had something to do with why my weekend was so great. Also, Caleb is a horse, Brent is curious, Jesse is a girl's lax coach (for reals), I am bendy, and Ryann is a prostitute. That made my weekend pretty great too. Maybe my weekend was so great because today I went to church, teamed up with my brothers in a game of Farkel, learned how to drive a stick-shift, my dad was home before 9, and I will be in bed by midnight. Anyway you look at it, my weekend was fantastic and I want to thank anyone and everyone who may have had something to do with it.

Terrible Testing

Just to vent about last night...
Here at BYU I don't feel like the brightest crayon in the box. High school was all about good grades and overachieving. That changed in the fall of 2008. This year, I have mostly been taking classes for my major- psychology. I love my psych classes and have finally felt like I can do this whole college thing. Until last night. I had a test yesterday for one of my favorite classes- Child Psychopathology. This was my 3rd test of the semester for the class. I did great on the first two tests and was feeling confident.
The test ran from Thursday to Monday. I had lacrosse all weekend so had to resort to paying the late fee and taking the test yesterday. Usually I go to the testing center, review for an hour, and take the test. The last test is handed out at 9 so I went to the testing center at 8. I haven't had a problem with this in the past.
When I walked into the testing center yesterday, the line for tests was looped around the top floor a few times, down the stairs, to the door, and looped around again. I was overwhelmed but just tried to study while I was in line. After waiting in line for 15 minutes I realized I didn't have my ID card. I talked to the girl behind me and she was nice enough to save my spot in line while I ran to my car. Freaking parking at BYU! The closest you can get is 15 minutes away from campus. So I had my back pack with my books and laptop and sprinted to my car. At some point my phone fell out of my back pack, but a nice boy chased me down to give it back. I got to my car and got my ID card, and threw my back pack in the trunk so that I could run back to the testing center in time. This means I didn't have anything to study while in line.
So I sprinted back to the testing center, past the signs that said "Do not walk alone at night," and found the girl who had saved my spot. Did I mention I have been sick and it was 38 degrees outside? When I got back in line, in the crowded building, I couldn't stop coughing. Everyone around me wanted to kill me I'm sure.
I finally was handed my test at 8:55 (remember last test handed out at 9?) and found that there were no seats when I got in the testing room. I was asked to move a few times because apparently you aren't allowed to sit on the floor to take a test. Testing center employees opened up some extra classrooms for people to sit. I searched the overflow to find no empty seats. I settled for a piano bench and ended up taking my test on the piano.
Needless to say, I did terrible on my test. So much for an A. It's not about grades, it's about what you learn, right?

Scattered and Long

Here is my first journal-type blog entry because I feel like blogging but about no certain issue or story. We'll start with Friday.
It was a pretty long day, but not in a bad way. I knew my day was packed so I walked out the door that morning dressed and ready for my night time adventures. I went to work at my dad's office for around 2 hours then headed to Alpine. About every Friday since September, I have babysat 3 little boys in Alpine. Evan just turned 7, Aidan is 4, and Jameson is just over 6 months old. They are super cute and fun and definitely keep me busy while their mom is at work. I decided winter would be a hard season to be a mom because kids apparently don't stay entertained indoors for extended amounts of time. Luckily the weather on Friday was perfect. When I showed up wearing nice clothes and my hair down and done, I didn't know that I would be filling wagons with sand and diving to get Evan out on his was to first base. I don't regret the grass stains. So what if he's 7? I won. After babysitting I hurried home so that I could make it to Disney on Ice with Ryann, Monique, and Holli. Ryann showed up with crowns for each of us to wear. I like to think crowns make me look really pretty :) just kidding... but really. Even if they are plastic and lined with pink fuzzy fabric. Disney on Ice was better than I expected. The skating was really cool and I am a sucker for Disney music. Yes we were the only group of 20 year old girls who went together. I will post pictures when I get them. The outing was followed by a trip to Denny's (we are classy like that) and learning "simple science."

Saturday morning we had a BYU alumni lacrosse game at West Minster's field. It was fun to get the old and new players together. We played against some girls who have a lot of talent! And for an alumni game, we had quite a bit of fans. The current team beat the older players by a good margin. Even though we won and it wasn't even a real game, I still was disappointed with how I played and wasn't in the best mood following the game because of it. Luckily I had a chance to redeem myself with the game against the U that night.
The University of Utah let us play on their new (huge) field. It was really nice. I was pumped to play until we showed up and it was dumping rain. We weren't prepared for that. I don't even know if my team has fully recovered since the last time we played in the rain. Flashbacks of bone-chilling Santa Barbara is all I have to say. This time tents were set up for the teams to keep us semi-dry. The U got up 3-1 at the beginning of the game (if I recall correctly) but thanks to Gretchen Schwartz being sexy, and Shelby Baron manically owning the U's defense and goalie the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, we won 16-6. I could have played better but wasn't mad at myself either like I was before. The game was fun to watch because my team was so fired up. The refs didn't know what was going on and the Utah girls play really dirty. I have never seen so many girls on my team so mad but I couldn't help but laugh.
Quotes I want to remember from Saturday:
1. [Ref calls Olivia for swinging at Maggie's head] Olivia: What's the helmet for?! Ref: Did you just swear?
2. [Praying for the rain to stop before the game, I don't remember the exact words] Marie: Please help the rain to stop, or please help us to have the strength to withstand the weather. Cookie: Marie! It's going to monsoon!
3. [Attempting to cheer Jordan on] Sierra: You got it Jordan! Do it again! You have defense on you this time but I think you can still do it!
4. [After pulling Brooke Smith out of the game with a few minutes left] Brooke: but I want to win! Coach: We're already winning.
5. Olivia: I've never been so pissed. I'm looking around the field pointing at the Utah girl's saying "I hate you. You're going to die. You're legs are coming off."
6. Anna: [In reference to the referees] "I'm sorry but you are a moron sir!"
>
Also, shout out to my mom and Gavin. The fact that they drove to Salt Lake to hang out in the wet and cold weather to watch me play means a lot! I am so grateful for the support system I have. Thank you!
This is a long post, mostly just for me to read for the sake of keeping a record, but I will try and sum up Sunday really quick. I got called to be secretary in the Relief Society. I am excited. I will be even busier but I have balanced a job, school, sports, and a relief society calling before. It was hard but I had a lot of help and was so blessed for it. After they announced it everyone kept coming up to me and saying "congratulations." I think "good luck" would have been more appropriate but it's all good. Also, it meant a lot to have Brother Marr Duersch set me apart because he has been a major role model of mine since I was in middle school. Love that man! If you aren't a member of the LDS church and are reading this, just don't worry about it because it probably doesn't make any sense, but if you want explanation let me know haha. Seriously though.
Church was followed by family birthday parties and playing "human rubber band." Mom do you read my blog? Maybe I shouldn't put that in print yet because my brother and I had to be a little sneaky to play this game. I think 'human rubber band' deserves it's own post so I'll work on that another time. Last night we watched Tosh.0, completely Sunday inappropriate, but I like seeing and hearing my dad sit down and laugh at the t.v. in March seeing as he doesn't get too many breaks during tax season.
Today I have just been to work, been to a research meeting, and am now in the library. My grandpa has a retirement dinner tonight I will be at. It is always fun to see my cousins.
Random thoughts of the day: starting another blog about something cool that people would want to follow and getting a minor in stats? There is a good chance neither of those will happen but they are both good ideas in my book.

National News

I like to think that the news about Davies is pretty big nationwide. If I did, then I would probably be making the same mistake fellow Utah county-ites makes in assuming that what happens here is followed by everyone. I am not sure if Jimmer Fredette gets mentioned on ESPN as often as BYU students think he does. I am not sure if Julianne Hough and David Archuletta are really celebrities or if people outside their hometowns just forget about previous winners and runner-ups. Word on campus is that The BYU Honor Code is the hot topic on Facebook and Twitter at the moment. Does this mean it's the big controversy among kids whose parents went to BYU, or could I really bring this up to start a conversation with someone in Kentucky who is ranked a 5 on a scale of 1-10 for college basketball enthusiasm? I currently live my life in the bubble and don't know if people outside the bubble care about this issue as much as people inside the bubble like to think that people outside the bubble do. Either way, I am proud to go to a school that doesn't make exceptions for their athletes, even if it does mean a heartwrenching loss or two. As a player on the most unrecognized team of the university (women's lacrosse) I believe that all athletes should be held responsible for representing their school. When you are playing for something bigger than yourself, that 'something bigger' should come before yourself. Don't get me wrong, I believe in rights to privacy, I believe we should be sympathetic, and I believe in forgiveness and mercy, but I also believe that BYU did the right thing in suspending Davies from playing on the previously ranked #3 team for the remainder of the season. Whether BYU is getting national attention for their basketball team or just think that they are, the campus celebrities should be held accountable for extending the image of a virtuous student body to the rest of the country.
